Behind the Screen: An Interaction with the Film Team Department of Journalism & Mass Communication

Field Visit to Victoria Public Hall

The Department of Visual Communication, SRM Institute of Science & Technology (Ramapuram), organised a field visit to Victoria Public Hall, Chennai on 31 July 2026 for 37 II B.Sc. Visual Communication students, guided by Dr. V. Prabakaran, Mr. S. Makesh, and Mr. Vigneshwaran. Students gained hands-on experience in photography, videography, and heritage documentation, blending classroom learning with real-world digital storytelling practice.

Workshop on Lighting

The Cinematography Lighting Workshop conducted by alumnus Mr. Arun Kumar Raja, a professional cinematographer, provided students with practical knowledge of camera operations, exposure control, and advanced lighting techniques used in film production. Through hands-on demonstrations and interactive discussions, participants gained valuable insights into visual storytelling, cinematography fundamentals, and industry practices, enhancing their technical and creative filmmaking skills.

Bridge Course for Freshers “Begin Your Journey into the World of Media”

The Department of Media Studies, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (Ramapuram), organised a five-day Bridge Course for Freshers from 22–28 July 2026 at the PG Dental Block, themed "Begin Your Journey into the World of Media," with 75 first-year students participating. Faculty members conducted sessions covering journalism, filmmaking, visual communication, sound, design, AI, and storytelling, helping freshers build a strong foundation and smooth transition into their media education journey.

Industrial Visit to Broadcast, Media & Cinema Expo 2026

The Department of Media Studies, SRM Institute of Science & Technology (Ramapuram), organised an industrial visit to the Broadcast, Media & Cinema Expo 2026 on 17 July 2026 at Chennai Trade Centre for 100 students, coordinated by Dr. V. Prabakaran and Mr. Manikandan. Students explored the latest in digital cinema, broadcasting, VFX, AI, and OTT technologies, with the expo inaugurated by Shri L. Murugan and attended by eminent industry professionals, offering valuable exposure to real-world media production practices.

Anna Centenary Library Visit

The Department of Visual Communication, SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Ramapuram, organised an educational visit to the Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram, Chennai, on 16 July 2026 for 17 M.Sc. Visual Communication second-year students. The visit provided students with valuable exposure to the library’s extensive collections, digital resources, reference sections, and modern facilities, encouraging independent learning, research, reading, and knowledge exploration beyond the classroom.

The Department of Media Studies, SRM Institute of Science & Technology (Ramapuram), organised the Freshers' Orientation Programme 2026–2027 – "Ignite Your Journey" on 9 July 2026, welcoming 70 new students with sessions by industry experts Mr. Amir Shahinsha, Mr. Sri Ganesh, and Ms. Lakshmi Subramanian. The programme, convened by Dr. V. Prabakaran, introduced students to career opportunities in animation, filmmaking, and journalism, inspiring them to build creativity, professionalism, and ethical values as they begin their academic journey.

“The Art of Seeing Differently”

The Department of Media Studies, SRM Institute of Science & Technology (Ramapuram), participated in "The Art of Seeing Differently," a three-day photography workshop held from 3–5 July 2026 at IIT Madras, organised by the Accessibility Research Centre (ARC) with 36 students from Visual Communication, Film Technology, and Journalism programmes. Convened by Dr. V. Prabakaran and coordinated by Mr. B. Saravanan and Mr. S. Makesh, the workshop introduced students to inclusive, multisensory approaches to photography through blindfold exercises and mentor-guided sessions with leading accessibility advocates and media professionals, fostering empathy and socially responsible visual storytelling.

The Art of Seeing Differently

The Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, organised an Expert Talk on "The Art of Seeing Differently" on 2 July 2026, delivered by Dr. Hemachandran Karah, Associate Professor and Co-Founder of the Accessibility Research Centre, IIT Chennai (Ph.D., University of Cambridge, UK), for Media Studies students—focusing on observation, perception, and creative thinking to help students view ideas from multiple perspectives, thereby enhancing their critical thinking and creative skills relevant to media and visual communication practices.

Gaming Beyond Reality: VR and AR Workshop in Collaboration with Infinix Mobile

SRM IST Ramapuram's Department of Visual Communication, in collaboration with Infinix Mobile, conducted the "Gaming Beyond Reality: VR and AR" workshop on 17 June 2026. The event gave 200 students hands-on experience with VR, AR, gaming technologies, and emerging XR applications.

The TALKIES – National Conference 2026

The TALKIES – National Conference 2026, organized by the School of Media Studies, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, was held on 28 March 2026. The International Short Film Festival & Competition – Silver Frames 26 provided a prestigious platform for aspiring filmmakers to showcase their creativity, storytelling abilities, and technical excellence in short filmmaking. Through competitive screenings, industry interaction, and recognition across multiple award categories, the festival encouraged innovation, cinematic expression, and a deeper appreciation of visual storytelling among students and professionals.

Voting Awareness

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at SRM Institute of Science and Technology organized a Voting Awareness Campaign on 16 March 2026 at Q Café. The initiative aimed to educate students on the importance of voting, democratic participation, and responsible media consumption during elections.

The guest lecture on “Importance of Industry Readiness for Film Students” provided valuable insights into the skills and professional competencies required to succeed in the film and media industry. Mr. M. Arun Sivakumar emphasized portfolio building, internships, networking, and adaptability, helping students gain a clearer understanding of industry expectations and career preparedness.

From Silence to Sounds: A Live Music Production Experience

The Department of Film Technology, SRMIST Ramapuram, conducted “From Silence to Sound: A Live Music Production Experience” on 11th March 2026. The session, led by composers Jose Franklin and SV Jerome, provided students with hands-on exposure to music production, sound design, and industry practices through live demonstrations and interactive discussions.

The Intercollegiate Painting Contest organized in celebration of International Women’s Day provided a creative platform for students to showcase their artistic talents and express perspectives on women’s empowerment. The event encouraged creativity, confidence, and inclusive participation while fostering artistic expression and awareness of social issues among students from various colleges.

The Workshop on “Navarasa” provided students with practical insights into the art of emotional expression and performance in visual storytelling. Through expert guidance from actor Mr. Rohith Muralidharan, participants gained a deeper understanding of the nine human emotions, acting techniques, and their significance in cinema, enhancing their creative and performance skills in media and film production.

The School of Media Studies, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, organized a 7-Day Professional Development Programme from 17 to 24 February 2026. The Industrial Visit – “Behind the Lens: Live Shooting Experience” provided Film Technology students with firsthand exposure to the real-world television production environment through a visit to the shooting set of the serial Mahanadhi. The experience enhanced their understanding of set design, camera operations, production workflows, and industry practices while offering valuable interactions with media professionals, thereby bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application.

The School of Media Studies, SRM IST Ramapuram, organized “35MM,” a national-level 35-hour short filmmaking challenge centered on the theme “Celebration – celebrate life, frame by frame.” Students from schools, colleges, and SRM competed by creating short films within 35 hours, showcasing creativity, storytelling, and technical excellence. The event concluded with an award ceremony honoring winners, with acclaimed filmmaker Vishnuvardhan serving as the Chief Guest.
