Dr. Prabakaran is an accomplished media academician with over two decades of experience in communication, film, and television. He currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Media Studies at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram.

Bio

Beginning his career in the Tamil film industry, Dr. Prabakaran has worked closely with renowned production houses such as Kalaippuli S. Thanu’s V Creations and Gautham Menon’s Photon Factory, contributing as an Assistant and Associate Director to several feature films. His professional experience also spans documentary filmmaking, television production, and a range of creative audio-visual projects, demonstrating a strong synergy between artistic vision and technical expertise. He has produced more than 200 television episodes and over 100 audio-visual presentations, underscoring his comprehensive understanding of the media production process.

As a researcher, Dr. Prabakaran holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. His doctoral study examined hero-centric narratives in Tamil cinema, developing a model to analyse hero-based films through the lens of Thirukkural, inspired by Gaston Roberge’s call to study Indian cinema through indigenous theoretical frameworks. He has published extensively on Tamil cinema, digital media culture, and film promotion in reputed national and international journals.

Bridging academia and industry, Dr. Prabakaran has organized several international conferences on media and visual literacy and continues to guide Ph.D. scholars in cinema and communication studies. His teaching, research, and creative practice reflect a deep commitment to fostering innovation, critical inquiry, and cultural understanding in media education.
