Objective of the Event : 

The primary objective of the NSS Orientation Programme, “Inspiring Youth, Serving Society, Building the Nation,” was to introduce students to the vision, mission, objectives, and activities of the National Service Scheme and create awareness of their role in community service and nation-building. The programme aimed to motivate students to participate actively in social welfare, health awareness, environmental protection, and community-development initiatives. It also sought to develop leadership, teamwork, discipline, empathy, and social responsibility while promoting the NSS motto, “Not Me, But You,” and encouraging selfless service toward society.

SUMMARY OF THE EVENT :

The Department of Commerce, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Business Studies, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, organized an NSS Orientation Programme titled “Inspiring Youth, Serving Society, Building the Nation” on 12 August 2026, from 8.00 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. at the East Block. The programme was organized for students to introduce them to the vision, mission, objectives, values, and activities of the National Service Scheme. It provided an appropriate platform for students to understand the importance of community engagement, responsible citizenship, voluntary service, and youth participation in national development. 

The orientation helped students recognize that education should extend beyond classroom learning and contribute meaningfully to the development of society. The sessions were coordinated by faculty members from the Department of Commerce, including Dr. C. Sahila, Associate Professor; Dr. P. Maheswari, Assistant Professor; Dr. R. Vijayalakshmi, Assistant Professor; Mr. S. Balakrishnan, Assistant Professor; and Ms. A. N. Amrin Fathima, Assistant Professor. The coordinators explained the roles, responsibilities, expected conduct, and opportunities available to NSS volunteers. They encouraged the students to participate sincerely in institutional and community-oriented programmes and to view volunteering as an opportunity for personal growth, social learning, and service to the nation. 

The programme also highlighted the personal and professional benefits of becoming an NSS volunteer. Participation in community-service activities enables students to develop leadership, communication, teamwork, decision-making, problem-solving, time-management, and organizational skills. It also strengthens empathy, discipline, patience, adaptability, and respect for diversity. The students were informed that exposure to real-life community situations could help them become socially conscious individuals who are capable of understanding different perspectives and responding responsibly to the needs of society.

The orientation was also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3—Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4—Quality Education, SDG 8—Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 16—Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The students gained an understanding of how NSS initiatives can support these global objectives through community-level action. Health-awareness programmes promote well-being, educational initiatives support inclusive learning, skill-development activities enhance employability, and responsible civic participation contributes to peaceful and inclusive institutions.
