SUMMARY OF THE EVENT: 

As part of the Digital Content Creation course curriculum, the School of Media Studies, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Ramapuram, organised a field visit to Victoria Public Hall, Chennai, on 31 July 2026 for the II B.Sc. Visual Communication students. The visit was convened by Dr. V. Prabakaran and coordinated by Mr. S. Makesh and Mr. Vigneshwaran, with 37 students participating in the programme. The field visit was designed to provide students with practical exposure to heritage documentation and enable them to apply the concepts of digital content creation in a real-world environment. Victoria Public Hall, one of Chennai's significant heritage landmarks, provided an ideal setting for students to explore architectural aesthetics, historical significance, cultural heritage, and restoration efforts while understanding their potential for visual and digital storytelling. The visit commenced at 9:00 a.m., with faculty members introducing students to the historical background of the building, its Indo-Saracenic architectural style, and its importance in the development of theatre, public gatherings, and cinema culture in Chennai. Students explored various sections of the heritage structure and observed architectural features such as arches, columns, stained-glass windows, ornamental brickwork, and restored interiors. As part of the practical learning activity, students used mobile phones and DSLR cameras to document the site by capturing wide-angle photographs, close-up architectural details, environmental portraits, and cinematic video sequences. Faculty members guided the students in applying principles of composition, framing, visual sequencing, and location-based storytelling. The students also discussed how historical monuments and public spaces can be transformed into engaging digital content for social media platforms, documentaries, tourism campaigns, promotional videos, and educational media. The activity enabled students to understand how visual narratives can be developed to communicate historical and cultural information effectively to contemporary audiences. The field visit helped students bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application by providing firsthand experience in photography, videography, heritage documentation, digital storytelling, and visual communication. It also encouraged students to appreciate the importance of preserving and communicating Chennai's cultural heritage through creative digital media. The programme contributed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, by promoting experiential learning, developing industry-relevant creative skills, creating awareness about heritage conservation, and encouraging the use of digital media for cultural documentation. Overall, the field visit to Victoria Public Hall was a valuable experiential learning initiative that enhanced students' observation, creativity, photography, videography, and digital storytelling skills while fostering a deeper appreciation for Chennai's rich architectural and cultural heritage.
