Faculty Immersion Program

Summary of the Event:

 

The Department of Computer Science with Specialization in Cyber Security organized a Faculty Immersion Program (FIP) at Laya Tech Pvt. Ltd., Nungambakkam, Chennai, on 25 July 2026 (Afternoon). The program was conducted for 15 faculty members and one full-time research scholar, with the objective of providing practical exposure to enterprise cybersecurity technologies, Security Operations Center (SOC) practices, cloud infrastructure, and operational technology (OT) security. The sessions were highly interactive, combining conceptual discussions with live demonstrations using industry-standard cybersecurity platforms.

The program commenced with a welcome address by Mr. P. Anand, Senior Manager – Technical Support, Laya Tech Pvt. Ltd., who introduced the organization's cybersecurity services and highlighted the growing importance of proactive security monitoring, threat intelligence, and managed security services in modern enterprises. He emphasized the need for academia to align teaching methodologies with current industry practices to prepare students for real-world cybersecurity challenges.

Session 1: Endpoint Security and XDR Technologies Resource Person: Mr. Shankar

Mr. Shankar delivered an insightful session on Endpoint Security by explaining the importance of protecting organizational endpoints against sophisticated cyber threats. The session included a live demonstration of Extended Detection and Response (XDR) technologies, illustrating how security events are correlated across multiple endpoints to detect advanced persistent threats.

The practical demonstration covered:

        Endpoint protection using enterprise security solutions

       XDR monitoring across multiple connected devices

       Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services used by corporate organizations

        Threat detection and automated incident response

        Security event prioritization using Low, Medium, and High severity classifications

       Live monitoring using the Sophos Centralized Dashboard 

The demonstration provided participants with a clear understanding of how centralized endpoint monitoring significantly improves organizational security posture. 

Session 2: SOC Operations, Log Analysis, and Threat Protection Resource Person: Mr. Vishal

Mr. Vishal conducted a comprehensive session focusing on Security Operations Center (SOC) activities and enterprise threat monitoring.
 

The major topics covered included:

  •         Log Analysis and Event Correlation
  •        Threat Protection Techniques
  •         Detection of unauthorized USB devices using Instance ID
  •         Application-level access blocking
  •         Website filtering and web access policies
  •         Updating organizational security management policies
  •        Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  •        Rule-based Alert Generation
  •        Email Security Monitoring
  •        Incident Response through Case ID Creation
  •         Case Management Workflow
  •         Introduction to SOC Analyst Learning Modules

     The live demonstrations showcased how SOC analysts investigate security incidents from initial detection through final resolution using centralized monitoring platforms. Participants gained practical insights into enterprise incident response procedures and security event management. 

Session 3: Enterprise Firewall Security using Sophos Resource Person: Mr. Arivu

Mr. Arivu presented an in-depth session on Enterprise Firewall Security using the Sophos SG135 Firewall.

The demonstration covered:

  •        Sophos SG135 Firewall Dashboard
  •         Firewall Rule Creation
  •         DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) Configuration for Network Segmentation
  •        Reducing Network Traffic through Firewall Policies
  •        Access Point Control Management
  •        DNS Configuration
  •         DHCP Rules and Policy Management
  •         VPN Configuration Rules
  •         Advanced Firewall Security Policies 

The session emphasized how properly configured firewall rules enhance network security while maintaining efficient communication across enterprise infrastructures. The live firewall configuration exercises enabled participants to understand real-world deployment strategies. 

Session 4: Operational Technology (OT) Security Resource Persons: Mr. Senthil Nathan and Team

Mr. Senthil Nathan and his technical team conducted an engaging session on Operational Technology (OT) Security, focusing on cybersecurity challenges in industrial environments.

A major highlight of the session was the presentation of real-time industrial case studies, including a live demonstration based on the Aavin Milk Factory production environment.

The session explained:

  •         OT Security Architecture
  •        Industrial Control Systems (ICS)
  •         Industrial Network Protection
  •         Monitoring Critical Infrastructure
  •         Industrial Threat Detection
  •         Real-time Security Incident Analysis
  •         Best Practices for Industrial Cybersecurity 

The practical demonstrations illustrated how cybersecurity principles are implemented in manufacturing environments to ensure uninterrupted operations while protecting industrial assets from cyber attacks.

 Session 5: Cloud Security and Virtualization Technologies Resource Person: Mr. Ajith

Mr. Ajith concluded the technical sessions with an extensive demonstration on Cloud Security, virtualization technologies, and AI-enabled security tools.

        Creating Virtual Cloud Environments using VMware

        Introduction to Amazon Web Services (AWS)

       Hands-on demonstration of Amazon EC2

        Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) concepts

       Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) implementation

        Creating and Managing ESXi Host Client

        Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS)

        Container orchestration in cloud environments

These demonstrations provided valuable exposure to current cloud security practices, virtualization technologies, and emerging AI-driven cybersecurity solutions.

Outcome of the Faculty Immersion Program

The Faculty Immersion Program successfully bridged the gap between academic knowledge and industrial cybersecurity practices by exposing faculty members to enterprise-grade security solutions and real-world cyber defense operations. 

The program enabled participants to: 

  •        Understand enterprise endpoint security and XDR technologies.
  •        Gain practical knowledge of Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services.
  •         Learn Security Operations Center (SOC) workflows and incident response procedures.
  •         Develop expertise in enterprise log analysis and threat detection.
  •         Understand firewall configuration and network security policies using Sophos Firewall.
  •        Explore industrial cybersecurity and Operational Technology (OT) security practices.
  •         Gain practical exposure to cloud security, virtualization, AWS services, VMware, and Kubernetes.
  •         Explore AI-assisted cybersecurity automation using modern workflow tools.
  •         Visualize global cyber threats using real-time cyber intelligence platforms.
