Cholamandal Artists
The Department of Fashion Designing, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology – Ramapuram, organized an Industrial Visit to Cholamandal Artists' Village, Injambakkam, on 30 July 2025. The visit enabled students to explore one of India's largest artist communities and gain first-hand knowledge of traditional and contemporary art forms, paintings, sculptures, handicrafts, batik, and textile-based crafts. Students observed the historical evolution of the artists' commune, interacted with artisans, and studied various creative practices, including handloom weaving, pottery, palm leaf art, and sustainable craft production. The exposure helped them appreciate the influence of cultural heritage on fashion design, traditional textile techniques, and eco-friendly design practices. The visit also inspired students to integrate indigenous craftsmanship with contemporary fashion concepts while strengthening their understanding of design innovation, cultural preservation, and sustainable development. Overall, the program was a valuable experiential learning opportunity that broadened students' creative perspectives, enhanced industry awareness, and motivated them to explore heritage-inspired fashion and design careers.
