A faculty-oriented Journal Club session on “Journal Metrics” was conducted on 08 August 2026 at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Ramapuram. The session was led by Dr. R. Renuga Devi, Associate Professor, Department of Data Science. The programme focused on creating awareness about journal quality, indexing, citation metrics, quartiles and effective publication practices.

The resource person explained major indexing databases such as Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed/MEDLINE, along with journal metrics including Journal Impact Factor (JIF), CiteScore and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR). The concepts of Q1–Q4 journal quartiles, h-index and i10-index were also discussed, highlighting the difference between journal-level and researcher-level metrics.

The session emphasized the importance of independently verifying journal indexing and quality, selecting journals relevant to the research field, and avoiding predatory or misleading publication practices. Participants gained practical knowledge to make informed journal-selection decisions and improve research visibility.

Overall, the programme served as a useful academic initiative to strengthen faculty awareness of responsible publishing, journal quality, research impact and institutional research performance.
